Shaping a Sustainable Mediterranean Blue Future
EFFECTIVE promotes large‑scale marine protected areas establishment in European seas, combining science, technology, and nature‑based solutions for ecosystem‑based management.
A Key Biodiversity Hotspot
EFFECTIVE’s ambition is to promote large‑scale marine protected areas establishment in European seas (contributing to 30% by 2030) through innovative marine ecosystems restoration and different observations and monitoring scales, which will allow an integrated approach involving governance, participation and social engagement.
Rich Marine Life
Diverse coastal and lagoon habitats support priority species and ecological processes important for migratory birds and marine biodiversity.
EU Protection
Designated as Natura 2000 and integrated into multiple EU environmental frameworks including Water Framework and Marine Strategy Directives.
Long‑term Data
Existing monitoring programs provide critical data on water quality, species abundance, and sediment conditions essential for ecosystem health.

EFFECTIVE in numbers
22 PARTNERS
EFFECTIVE consortium comprises 22 partners – universities, research organisations and institutes, SMEs, public institutions and solution providers from 12 European countries – Spain, Greece, The Netherlands, Cyprus, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Czechia, Ukraine, Bulgaria, Austria, Denmark and United Kingdom.
4 PILOT SITES
EFFECTIVE supports the implementation of the Ecosystem‑Based Management System (EBMS) across four pilot areas — Mar de l’Empordà, Ebró Delta, Northern Sardinia, and Cavo Greco — to advance protection and restoration efforts. It also considers the ecological connectivity between three of these sites through the existing Cetacean Migration Corridor.
3 PILLARS
To achieve its core objective, the EFFECTIVE project brings together partners with extensive expertise across all three pillars of the Ecosystem‑Based Management System (EBMS) — managerial, informational, and participatory — spanning from research institutions to private companies.
Community Engagement
Public engagement and citizen science activities are an integral part of conservation efforts within the project, supporting awareness, participation, and long‑term stewardship.
Co‑creation & Governance
Restoration and management strategies are co‑designed with stakeholders through Living Labs.
Education & Citizen Science
Engagement with local students and volunteer programs to connect communities with marine science.
Beach Cleanups
Regular community initiatives focused on removing litter and supporting environmental stewardship.
Local Partnerships
Environmental education centres dedicated to showcasing marine values and supporting revitalization.
