EFFECTIVE

Enhancing social well being and economic prosperity by reinforcing the eFFECTIVEness of protection and restoration management in Mediterranean MPAs

The Cyprus Marine and Maritime Institute (CMMI), a key partner in the EFFECTIVE project, was recently featured in an interview highlighting their groundbreaking coral conservation project in Cape Greco, Cyprus. They focus on protecting Cladocora caespitosa, an endangered Mediterranean coral species threatened by climate change and human activity.

In the interview, CMMI experts describe their innovative restoration techniques, including floating coral nurseries. These nurseries allow coral fragments to grow in controlled conditions before being reintroduced to their natural habitat, improving their survival and promoting the recovery of damaged reef ecosystems.

The project also emphasizes the importance of scientific research and monitoring to understand coral adaptation and ensure long-term conservation success. By combining advanced restoration techniques with ongoing data collection, CMMI is helping to develop sustainable solutions for marine biodiversity protection.

Beyond scientific impact, the initiative fosters community engagement by raising awareness about marine conservation. This collaborative approach encourages public participation and highlights the urgent need to protect fragile marine ecosystems across the Mediterranean.
