Enhancing social well being and economic prosperity by reinforcing the eFFECTIVEness of protection and restoration management in Mediterranean MPAs

The Ebro Delta Bays, a protected Natura 2000 area in the Western Mediterranean, are home to fragile marine habitats and species, making them a key focus of the EFFECTIVE project. However, challenges such as water quality issues continue to threaten the ecological balance of this unique ecosystem.

A bathymetric survey was recently conducted in Els Alfacs Bay, Spain, led by GPA SEABOTS. Using a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) and an autonomous aquatic vehicle (USV) equipped with a multifrequency mono-beam echo sounder, researchers gathered valuable data on seabed depth and sediment thickness. These findings will play a crucial role in guiding future marine restoration activities.

This survey is essential for understanding the impact of rice farming discharge on shallow waters and identifying physical barriers to ecosystem recovery. By combining advanced technologies with nature-based solutions, the project is taking important steps toward restoring and protecting marine environments in the Ebro Delta.

Stay tuned for more updates from our EFFECTIVE Pilot 2 activities.
