EFFECTIVE Project Advances Marine Conservation with Stakeholder Workshops in Sardinia

The EFFECTIVE Project recently reached a key milestone in its Policy frame and EBMS toolbox activities. On October 20 and 21, One Ocean Foundation (OOF), in collaboration with Agencia Estatal Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Cientificas (CSIC) and local MPA management, hosted two pivotal stakeholder workshops at the Sinis – Isola di Mal di Ventre MPA in Sardinia..

Bow-Tie Analysis Workshop: Engaging Local Fisheries

Held on the afternoon of October 20, the first session focused on the direct environmental pressures facing the region’s marine ecosystems.
Target Audience: Local fishermen operating within and around the MPA.
Core Activity: A comprehensive Bow-Tie analysis exercise.
Key Discussions: Participants collaboratively explored the root causes and direct impacts of various pressures on fishery resources and habitats. The session highlighted existing safeguards and brainstormed potential mitigation measures to protect both the local fisheries and the broader marine environment.

Business and Nature Workshop: Aligning Economics with Ecology

The morning of October 21 shifted the focus to the broader blue economy, welcoming local businesses operating in the coastal zone.
Participants: Tourism operators, accommodation providers, boat and RIB rental companies, birdwatching guides, and fishing tourism businesses.
Core Themes: The workshop facilitated reflection on the intrinsic relationship between healthy marine ecosystems and the long-term vitality of local economic activities.
Strategic Focus: Attendees discussed the pressures commercial activities place on the marine environment and identified actionable opportunities to integrate ocean and nature conservation principles directly into their business decision-making.

Strategic Leadership and Future Implementation

The sessions were significantly enriched by the presence and facilitation of Prof. Rafa Sardà from CSIC. Furthermore, participants contributed to a detailed questionnaire developed under One Ocean Foundation’s Ocean Impact Initiative Framework. The data and insights gathered from these local stakeholders will directly shape the upcoming phases of the EFFECTIVE Project, supporting our ultimate goal of fostering more sustainable and resilient coastal communities. Special gratitude is extended to the Municipality of Cabras, the Sinis MPA, and all local participants for their hospitality, collaboration, and active engagement.
