Last month, the EFFECTIVE project proudly supported a crucial workshop hosted by our partner, Ocean Ecostructures, that brought together a diverse group of scientists to advance the concept of Good Environmental Status (GES) within selected Marine Protected Areas (MPAs).

Held on July 2nd at the Biblioteca Municipal de L’Estartit in Girona, Spain, the session was highly productive. It marked a significant first step in downscaling GES to specific MPAs, a critical task for the project. We convened a robust panel of experts, each bringing invaluable knowledge to the table. Specialists in marine ecology, fisheries science, oceanography, biodiversity conservation, and environmental monitoring were all represented, ensuring comprehensive coverage of the relevant fields.

Key outcomes from the discussions include the foundation for a pressure matrix, which will be vital for next year’s decision-making tool for the Ecosystem Based Management System, and the initial groundwork for a scientific paper. This collaborative effort underscores our commitment to strengthening the robustness of future work within the EFFECTIVE project!

The concept of a Digital Twin represents a cutting-edge approach to ocean conservation, leveraging the explosion of data from various sources and advanced computing technologies. A Digital Twin is essentially a digital replica of a physical entity, enabling users to access high-quality information, services, models, scenarios, forecasts, and visualizations. In ocean conservation, this concept is pursued through initiatives like the EU’s Destination Earth (DestinE) and the G7 Future of the Seas and Oceans Initiative. By integrating continuous observation, modelling, and high-performance simulation, Digital Twins provide accurate predictions of future developments, essential for managing the impacts of climate change and pollution on marine environments. Recent European Commission-funded projects, such as ILIAD, IMMERSE, and BLUE-CLOUD, are foundational efforts toward developing the Digital Twin of the Ocean (DTO), which aims to offer valuable knowledge to stakeholders, from citizens to policymakers.

 

The EFFECTIVE project is actively aligning with the principles of the Digital Twin concept to enhance ocean conservation efforts. By integrating existing knowledge and data from European aggregators like SeaDataNet, EMODnet, and Copernicus Marine Service, we are developing the Digital Twin of Blue Parks. This Digital Twin will utilize geospatial databases covering various marine and climatic components to provide comprehensive insights into the state of marine environments. Our collaboration with expert partners ensures that accurate data is delivered to feed into the models, supporting the creation of a prototype Digital Twin for selected blue parks.

 

Our ambition is to capitalize on the extensive knowledge and results from relevant projects to advance the Digital Twin of Blue Parks. By leveraging EO data and geospatial databases, we aim to cover aspects such as the water column, sea floor, cetacean distribution, and climatic components. This initiative will help us deliver innovative tools and strategies for restoring and preserving marine and coastal habitats. Through our partnership with MARIS, ETT, FORTH, DHI, CMMI, we ensure that the correct data is integrated into existing services, enhancing our efforts to support a sustainable blue economy.

Ocean Ecostructures: Insights from monitoring expedition of Pilot 1

The inaugural monitoring expedition of Pilot 1 by our partners Ocean Ecostructures, GPA Seabots, and the authorities of the Parc Natural del Montgrí, les Illes Medes i el Baix Ter marks a significant milestone in the EFFECTIVE project.

Set against the backdrop of Cala Calella in the Mar de l’Empordà, this expedition embodies scientific exploration and the project’s commitment to marine ecosystem restoration and preservation. Cala Calella stands as an invaluable control site within the EFFECTIVE project. This untouched marine environment is a reference to prove the efficacy of restoration efforts. Cala Calella is untouched by human interference, offering invaluable insights into undisturbed marine ecosystems. 

The monitoring expedition’s main objective was to assess Cala Calella’s marine ecosystem. By gathering data on physicochemical parameters, water quality, biodiversity, and biomass, the expedition aimed to establish a baseline for future comparison. Additionally, the expedition sought to evaluate the feasibility of implementing marine regeneration structures and seeding flagship species within this pristine environment. 

The expedition provided invaluable data and insights into Cala Calella’s marine ecosystem.

Physicochemical parameters revealed optimal conditions conducive to marine life, highlighting the area’s importance as a biodiversity hotspot. Water quality assessments featured pristine conditions, emphasizing the need for conservation efforts to maintain this balance. 

Biodiversity surveys revealed a rich marine life, showcasing the abundance and diversity of species inhabiting Cala Calella’s waters. From coral formations to marine mammals, each discovery underscored the area’s ecological significance. 

Furthermore, biomass assessments provided insights into the trophic dynamics of Cala Calella’s ecosystem, offering valuable data for future restoration efforts. These findings serve as a testament to the importance of preserving untouched marine environments and highlight their importance in global biodiversity conservation. 

The data gathered during the monitoring expedition will serve as a foundation for the EFFECTIVE project’s work in marine ecosystem restoration. The knowledge gained from Cala Calella will inform the design and implementation of restoration actions within degraded areas like the Port of Estartit. By using the natural resilience of immaculate environments, the project aims to develop sustainable solutions for marine ecosystem regeneration.

The Catalan company and one of the esteemed partners in the EFFECTIVE project, Ocean Ecostructures has developed a new technology to regenerate marine ecosystems, that uses a biomaterial made from byproducts, surpluses or waste that could not be reused.

They produce biomimetic multilayer micro reefs made from this natural substrate, specifically designed for marine infrastructures, complete and functional.

Implemented at the bottom of the ocean, the resistance and behavior of this material was already tested at Vilanova I la Geltrú, in Barcelona. According to the Director of Operations in Ocean Ecostructures, it is possible to develop structures based on natural substrate that favor the formation of new habitats for marine species.

For the EFFECTIVE project, this type of technological innovation is extremely important to accelerate the process of protecting the seas and their ecosystems. It is an emerging problem that requires the collaboration of numerous entities. Only collaboration fuels transformation.
