Bridging Efforts for Healthier Oceans: EFFECTIVE Joins Forces with Sister Projects in Joint Webinar

The race to protect and restore our oceans requires strong collaboration, shared knowledge, and innovative management. In this spirit, the EFFECTIVE project proudly teamed up with three fellow Horizon Europe initiatives – MSP4BIO, Ocean Citizen, and Blue4All – on May 12 for an insightful joint webinar dedicated to making Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) more effective in practice.

The online event brought together experts, researchers, and ocean advocates to exchange real-world experiences, methodologies, and governance approaches. Representing the EFFECTIVE project, Project Coordinator Natalia Preciado shared invaluable insights into how our initiative is actively connecting restoration actions, advanced monitoring, digital tools, and robust governance frameworks. Her presentation highlighted how these combined efforts are paving the way for healthier, more resilient, and better-managed Mediterranean MPAs.

Throughout the session, speakers from across the four projects explored critical pillars of modern marine conservation, including:

– Marine ecosystem restoration and practical implementation strategies.
– MPA governance and the vital role of stakeholder participation.
– Maritime Spatial Planning (MSP) to balance ecological and socio-economic needs.

Last month, the EFFECTIVE project proudly supported a crucial workshop hosted by our partner, Ocean Ecostructures, that brought together a diverse group of scientists to advance the concept of Good Environmental Status (GES) within selected Marine Protected Areas (MPAs).

Held on July 2nd at the Biblioteca Municipal de L’Estartit in Girona, Spain, the session was highly productive. It marked a significant first step in downscaling GES to specific MPAs, a critical task for the project. We convened a robust panel of experts, each bringing invaluable knowledge to the table. Specialists in marine ecology, fisheries science, oceanography, biodiversity conservation, and environmental monitoring were all represented, ensuring comprehensive coverage of the relevant fields.

Key outcomes from the discussions include the foundation for a pressure matrix, which will be vital for next year’s decision-making tool for the Ecosystem Based Management System, and the initial groundwork for a scientific paper. This collaborative effort underscores our commitment to strengthening the robustness of future work within the EFFECTIVE project!

We’re excited to share insights from our recent internal workshop, organised by the project partner SPOTTERON, focusing on COSEA Data Access for all EFFECTIVE Pilot Areas and beyond! 

On February 19th, partners collaborated to refine the COSEA questionnaire and optimise the app, ensuring it meets the unique needs of each pilot area. 

Philipp from SPOTTERON provided an in-depth look at the latest COSEA app updates, demonstrating how we’re advancing our goal of implementing an innovative Digital Twin for data exploration, research, and citizen science.

In a groundbreaking showcase of marine innovation, Cyprus Marine and Maritime Institute (CMMI) participated in the 15th Annual Breaking the Surface Workshop presenting the EFFECTIVE project to a diverse audience of experts, scientists, and industry leaders. 

Breaking the Surface Workshop: A Confluence of Marine and Maritime Excellence 

Breaking the Surface, an internationally acclaimed workshop since 2009, has been a melting pot for knowledge exchange in various maritime fields, including robotics, biology, archaeology, security, and geology. The latest edition, held from 24/09 to 01/10 2023, provided a unique platform for attendees to delve into the latest scientific research, technological achievements, and hands-on experiences with state-of-the-art underwater systems. 

Dr. Manos Moraitis, the representative from CMMI, captivated the audience with an introduction to the EFFECTIVE project. CMMI is involved in the leadership of the tasks related to restoration solutions and monitoring methods. The project aims to revolutionize coral conservation by implementing innovative restoration techniques, such as artificial nurseries, within or adjacent to the Cape Greco Marine Protected Area in Cyprus. 

The Path Forward: CMMI’s Vision for Marine and Maritime Advancements 

As we navigate the ever-evolving landscape of marine and maritime challenges, CMMI remains dedicated to pioneering solutions that go beyond the surface. The EFFECTIVE project serves as a testament to their commitment to pushing the boundaries of technology and conservation, ensuring a harmonious coexistence between human activity and marine ecosystems. 

CMMI’s participation in Breaking the Surface Workshop marks a significant milestone in the journey toward marine and maritime excellence.
