One Ocean Foundation supports the implementation of the ecosystem-based management framework in the pilot area of Sardinia Septentrional, taking advantage of its in-depth knowledge of the context and its established relationships with local stakeholders.

SEASTAINABLE VENTURES is an expert in accelerating and managing new and innovative projects to help society in the transition to a blue economy. In the EFFECTIVE project, SV will develop innovative business models to establish economic survival and become time-lasting.

According to them, the EFFECTIVE project’s main objective is to develop a comprehensive scientific knowledge base and practical guidance, combining science, technological nature-based solutions, digitalization and social implications for the application of the Ecosystem-Based management to the protection and restoration management of the EU’s Mediterranean Blue Natural Capital.

EFFECTIVE project means a step forward to integrate scientific base knowledge on the protection of marine ecosystems and threatened species, through a toolbox of Nature-based innovative and technological solutions which they are proud to be part of.

May we introduce you to IOW! How effective is the current management of Marine Protected Areas? And how can the ecosystem service concept support the governance and extension of MPAs? These are questions, the IOW team would like to address in EFFECTIVE.

Highlight of the Organization:

IOW is a non-university marine research institute. Its Research Unit Coastal Seas and Society researches the effects of human activities, interventions, and measures in coastal and marine systems, the implementation of coastal and marine policy, and the impacts of responses to regional changes.

Project Statement/Quote:

The IOW team is excited to contribute to the EFFECTIVE management of MPAs, explore the use of ecosystem service assessment for marine governance, and support a transfer of knowledge from the Baltic to the Mediterranean Sea and vice versa.

ETT’s primary role in the EFFECTIVE project is to manage and visualise marine data to ensure precise documentation of the project’s impacts on marine ecosystems. Antonio Novellino coordinates ETT’s team within the EFFECTIVE project. His focus is on achieving the objectives set by EFFECTIVE and ensuring accurate marine data management and visualization. Valeria Pizziol: R&D Project Manager

Valeria ensures that all activities planned in the EFFECTIVE project are carried out, keeping coordinators and partners updated through periodic meetings and conferences. Her dedication to continuous and well-managed efforts highlights the importance of coordinated global actions in environmental restoration.

Marco Alba: R&D Tech Manager

Marco Alba is a senior developer coordinating ETT’s back-end team. In the EFFECTIVE project, he links data collected to EMODnet Physics, contributing to technological advancements and improving data management and analysis efficiency.

Personal Perspective: “Working on the project shows me how advancements in technology and software are continually improving. These developments make our tasks more efficient and significantly help researchers in restoring and preserving natural environments.”

Rachele Bordoni: R&D Project Manager at ETT / PhD Student in Marine Ecology at Università degli Studi di Genova

Rachele Bordoni ensures that all project activities are carried out correctly and on time, updating coordinators and partners in meetings and conferences. Her work in the EFFECTIVE project supports her PhD studies, focusing on developing habitat suitability models and creating a decision support system.

Personal Perspective: “The EFFECTIVE project has been an invaluable resource for me both in my job at ETT and in my PhD. It is crucial to study the environment and its relationship with human activities to provide tools and insights that lead to sustainable decisions to protect our planet.”

Coral Soul: the partner responsible for deep coral reef restoration in the EFFECTIVE Project

Coral Soul is a crucial partner within the EFFECTIVE Project, focusing its efforts on Pilot Area 3 in Northern Sardinia. Their mission is to monitor, recover, and conserve the precious Mediterranean gorgonian coral reefs through a multifaceted approach encompassing population surveys, impact assessments, and climate change early warning programs – all conducted in situ, with active engagement from local communities and dive centers.

Coral Soul is leading the deep coral reef restoration by implementing innovative techniques exclusively underwater by a highly trained scientists’ team in deep diving, applying never-before-described techniques to restore reefs damaged by climate change. Their commitment to underwater restoration sets them apart as specialists in the field, driving transformative change in marine conservation efforts.

F6S Innovation is leading the Work Package of Communication & Dissemination within the EFFECTIVE Project, being also responsible for its Stakeholder Management Plan, making the international Stakeholder Community of the project grow and exploiting all its results reaching the widest public spheres.

F6S is one of the main project partners that will help to reach EFFECTIVE’s main objective: develop a comprehensive scientific knowledge base and practical guidance, combining science, technological nature-based solutions, digitalization and social implication for the application of the Ecosystem-Based management to the protection and restoration management of the EU’s Mediterranean Blue Natural Capital.

The EFFECTIVE project collaborates with a leading organisation specializing in Marine and Oceanographic Data Management services on a European scale – MARIS.

MARIS will play a pivotal role in the project by developing a groundbreaking 2D and 3D digital twin of EFFECTIVE’s Marine Protected Areas, coupled with innovative marine data management solutions.

Main Role

MARIS’s primary responsibility is to craft a comprehensive demo of 2D and 3D digital twins for EFFECTIVE’s Marine Protected Areas. These digital replicas will serve as powerful tools for visualizing and understanding the marine environment, fostering effective conservation strategies. Furthermore, MARIS will contribute its expertise in marine data management, ensuring a seamless flow of information throughout the project.

MARIS has carved a niche for itself by being actively involved in the development and operation of Marine and Oceanographic Data Management services and networks on a European scale like EMODnet, SeaDataNet, Blue-Cloud, JERICO-S3, FAIR-EASE and more. In these projects and programmes MARIS works together with other partners in the domain to make marine data more FAIR, meaning better Findable (in catalogues), Accessible (via user interface and machine services), Interoperable (via harmonised metadata and dataformats), and Reusable (via including e.g. provenance information for the data or product). Their commitment to advancing marine data solutions has positioned them as leaders in the field, making them an ideal partner for the EFFECTIVE project.

“Our project contribution is all about smart ways to handle marine data. We will focus on data management and will use innovative technologies like 2D and 3D digital twins to understand and protect Marine Protected Areas. By doing local studies and using marine models, we’re working together with the projects partners to take better care of our oceans.”
